With the terrific technological progress made and scientific research done, there is still no product or service invented by humans that can give true and enduring rest to the soul.
In today’s world where everyone seems to be on the move and everything is fast paced, it is becoming more and more difficult to embrace the principle of rest and enjoy the refreshing benefits that come with it.
It is understandable that many people are weighed down by the many uncertainties, anxieties, challenges and obligations that life throws at them daily. Understanding and acting upon the Word of God in the Bible bring us a lot of blessings. Let’s take a look at the Holy Scriptures.
Rest is God’s promise for us
“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” (Matthew 11:28-30, ESV)
The invitation into rest made above was by Jesus Christ and it is one of the most comforting promises in the Bible.
This verse indicates Jesus as the Fountainhead of Rest. He calls out to everyone going through life stressed, oppressed and worn out to come to Him – the prince of peace and the fountain of living waters that can refresh your soul.
In Christ, you can always feel and know that you are secured. Peace that surpasses human understanding can be your experience. You can also have mind and strength renewed to face each day and each challenge that comes your way. His grace is ever sufficient for you.
Sabbath Rest Principle
In Genesis, the first book of the Bible, God established the principle of rest. After God made all that he created, the Scripture says he chose to rest on the seventh day, not because he was exhausted, but he wanted to put in place the principle of rest and model it to us.
“And on the seventh day God finished His work that He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work that He had done.” (Genesis 2:2, ESV)
The Israelites, God’s chosen people, were later commanded by God to observe the Sabbath.
“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God.” (Exodus 20:8-10, ESV)
Rest is an act of faith and obedience – depending on the Lord for our provisions, protection, progress, preservation and peace of mind. There is a limit to the results our efforts can yield.
In our hustle, struggles and strivings to meet our needs, reach our goals and live out our dreams, we sometimes neglect our devotion to God Almighty the One who can marvellously help us and give us true rest.
